Broadcast on Thursday, May 29, 2026, Nippon TV News featured findings from GMO Brand Security's "Nationwide University and Junior College Email Security Survey." The program highlighted the current state of email security among educational institutions based on our survey of 1,103 universities and junior colleges across Japan (including national, public, and private universities and junior colleges).

The survey revealed that only 5.3% of universities and junior colleges have implemented effective DMARC settings (quarantine/reject) that can actually block spoofed emails, exposing a serious "high‑risk" situation with regard to impersonation and phishing emails affecting the vast majority of educational institutions.

It was also noted that email sender domains can easily be spoofed, and attackers are exploiting the high level of social trust associated with university names to send phishing emails. Cases involving fake acceptance notifications have also been reported, highlighting the urgent need for countermeasures.

GMO Brand Security will continue to contribute to strengthening cybersecurity measures for educational institutions and businesses and to realizing a safe, secure digital society through advanced research and analysis of domain and email security.
